Needed Services
With a stand-alone generator, you don’t have to fuel up during emergencies or run long extension cords in the middle of the night or in pouring rain. Instead, the generator will automatically kick on to immediately take over, powering your home.
Electric Start – Unlike portable generators, most home generators will start themselves automatically when they sense a loss of utility power from your home’s electrical panel. Even if they don’t start automatically, home generators often have a remote start, which is significantly easier than a pull cord that you might find on a portable generator.
Automatic Transfer Switch – Generators with over 5,000-watt output are required to have an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). The ATS automatically switches your home’s electrical panel from its connection to the grid to your generator when it detects a loss of power (and can also trigger some generators to start automatically). The ATS also protects the city’s electrical grid from being back-fed power by your generator. Home generators with less than a 5,000-watt output and portable generators typically have a manual transfer switch, which is less convenient than an automatic transfer switch.
Increased Power Capacity – Home generators usually provide power to an entire home. While portable generators often average between 3,500 and 10,000 watts, home generators usually have a capacity of 8,000 to 50,000 watts or more. With the average U.S. home needing a minimum of 5,000 to 15,000 watts for essential appliances, the increased power capacity of a home generator gives you peace of mind when the power goes out, so you can keep everything you need running.
Permanently Installed – Home generators are permanently installed right outside of your home. You may not even have to go outside to get backup power immediately when the power goes out. Additionally, most home generators run on liquid propane and natural gas, which can be permanently attached to your generator, so you never need to worry about going to the store and buying fuel.
You may already own a portable generator or do not want to invest in an automatic stand-alone generator. A good second option is to install a manual generator transfer switch to connect your portable generator to your home. The benefit of a manual generator transfer switch is that the setup to power the items you have determined to be critical in the case of a power outage is already set up. So instead of running extension cords from your portable generator to these items in your home, you move the portable generator to its location, connect it and flip the transfer switch to power your home or the critical items in your home. Our specialists can help you select and order the right generator and select and install the transfer switch for you.
A portable generator is the most economical option to power your home or at least some critical items. While it will require running extension cords and trips to fill it with fuel, it is still a good option for powering critical items in your home in case of an outage. Contact our generator specialists for assistance selecting and ordering the right portable generator for your home.
